I purchased a used 2002 3/4 ton suburban with the 6.0 engine. Can anyone tell me how I can determine what gear ratio I have. I believe there were two options for this model one of them being a 4.10?

I made my first trip to the river pulling my boat and I have to say I was very unimpressed with the pulling performance. This led me to believe that I may have the higher gear ratio option. My 5.3L 1/2 ton Z71 had much more pulling power (with 4.10 gears) although the chasis stability wasnt nearly is good which is really the important part.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Chad

Check your glove box for one of these codes:

GU6 3.42:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GT4 3.73:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GT5 4.10:1 Rear Axle Ratio

My 'other' truck is an '06 Sub 2500 w/a 6.0 and the 3.73's came standard; 4.10's an option.

Turns out it has the 3:73's in it sad.gif

I think I am going to install 4:10's so far I have quotes from 2500.00-1400.00 for front and rear, of course the highest price was the Chevy dealer. Hopefully this will make a noticable difference in pulling performance.

I looked and compaired these codes in my 05 Z71 and I can not match them. I have found my original window sticker though and it says I have 3.23 gears??? Is this True or a typo????

For 05 RPO Codes try this link

05 RPO Codes

Could be possible

GT4 Rear axle, 3.73 ratio
GT5 Rear axle, 4.10 ratio
GU5 Rear axle, 3.23 ratio
GU6 Rear axle, 3.42 ratio

Well, I bit the bullet and bought 4.10 gears front and rear, what a difference! biggrin.gif
While it was in the shop I also had a Gibson exhause put on, ah the beautiful sound of an uncorked V8, music to my ears. It feels like I put 50 extra horsepower in my Burban. Better off the line, better on the road and better on the freeway. I even think my gas mileage is better. If you have a 2500 with a 6.0L I highly recommend the gear change.

Great news!

If you dont mind me asking, how much was it all to do the gear change?

Hmm, you dont have the GU6 code on your SPID sticker??

Interesting, I checked the codes in my 05 Z and I have the 3.42's.
I always thought the 3.42's were standard.

I paid 1600.00 for the front and rear gear change.
