On the Tahoes and Suburbans with 4 wheel discs, an inoperative parking brake is a very common problem. Most of the time it is just out of adjustment since the brake is not self adjusting. Here is how to get your brakes back.

Thanks for the detailed instructions! I would like to try this, however I can't find a tool to use for measuring the drum ID/pad OD. I checked Sears and a local auto parts store with no luck. All they have is a regular 6" caliper which I can't figure out how to use in this application. What do you recommend?

Thanks!
Lynn
Hyperhat, I found mine on one of those K-D Tools turn-around stand at my local auto parts store. Just a few dollars. It will get you real close, real easy, and real quick. I use it for all the cars/trucks with drum brakes. rolleyes.gif

A pair of 6" calipers won't cut it. You'll be measuring about 10-11" across. K-D makes a tool that is specifically for this. Check at a place such as NAPA or Pep Boys.

Thanks a lot guys!

I have only had my new '01 LT Tahoe for 24 hours now and still excited about getting it all fixed up and like new!

This really is a great site. biggrin.gif

Well, I decided to go the lazy route to get the e-brake working... Took it to a recommended shop. When they had the first rotor off I went over to take a look. The e-brake pads were worn down all the way in some spots and there was a ~1/8 inch groove worn into the inside of the rotors. I decided to have them replace both rotors and the e-brake pads. Everything works perfectly now. I even made sure the rear wheels spun freely.

Question. After making the adjustment, how far should the parking brake go to the floor befoe it stops the truck?
carguru
Welcome aboard. On mine, after the adjustment, 1/2 -3/4 pedal to the floor will hold the truck on a pretty steep slope.

Thanks. I should have read the link prior to posting.
