Just purchased a white 2004 Tahoe Z71. 192000 on the odometer, but it doesn't look like it or drive like it has that many miles. Any suggestions from you veterans on things I can do to increase the longevity of the drivetrain would be appreciated.

No doubt on the maintenance, any suggestions on oil? Synthetic or regular? Stay with recommended weight? I know these 5.3 engines are really built well and know it's possible to get a lot of miles out of them.

Is there actually any non synthetic oil out there anymore? Seems only the generic cheap oil is the only ones. Personally, synthetic is all I run. It is a little insurance policy at temp extremes and at startup. Just make sure to stick with the recommended weights.

The 5.3's only kryptonite is the castech heads. However it doesn't crop up as a problem in most vehicles.

Changed oil and air filter yesterday. Used mobile 1 Full synthetic high mileage. Think I'm going to find a 5.3 from a salvage yard, go ahead and rebuild it and have it ready should this one decide to blow. I have put about 1500 miles on it since I bought it with no issues, well except that the tow/haul switch doesn't work, light comes on, but no change in rpm's. Hopefully I will get a few years out of it before the engine dies. Thanks for the welcomes and advice.

Welcome, and ditto on the maintenance tips. For any used vehicle, the way it was taken care of speaks volumes in how it will treat you! thumbsup.png

If the light comes on, it might be working. The change isn't very noticable. It merely holds the lower gear a bit longer before shifting.
