What's the situation in southern Pennsylvania as far as rust and rot goes? Harrisville/Jonestown/Philadelphia area?

I grew up in Michigan and we always had issues with rust on the underbody and various other locations...Since living and buying vehicles in Texas, I have loved working on my 235k mile trucks and not having an issue with rust and getting bolts out.

How bad is the rust issue? Looking at an 06 with just over 100k on it... Carfax says it was owned in CT, but a dealer in PA is selling it.
Obviously, I will try to get additional pictures of the underbody, but is there anything I need to look out for before flying up there?

Imho, CT and PA is very much in the Rust Belt. I would even argue that due to the proximity to the Ocean, CT might be tougher on vehicles than the Midwest. Also Many areas of PA are rather hilly and they probably use alot of salt, so keep that in mind.

So definitely check it out closely.

North of VA, it is pretty much rust belt. And now even some of the states further south uses sand and salt during the snowy days.

Arvetus - Definitely check it out. While it's in the rust belt, there are exceptions.

For example, my wife's '05 Tahoe was bought used in 2007 with I think 68 or 69k on it. It was registered in Syracuse NY, and DEFINITELY in the rust belt, but the truck was EXCEPTIONALLY clean underneath, and the exterior finish on it was great. I had it on a lift before we bought it and everything looked amazingly clean, like it was never in salt. Now, 10 years later and with only 92k on it (my wife does not drive much!) the only part of the truck that has just a touch of rust is the bumpers! Underneath is still very clean, and it's a pleasure to work on.

As for the bumpers, it's a common issue. Several years ago I had them repainted, but it is just starting to show again in a few spots. My wife loves the truck, is not interested in replacing it with something newer (but I am) and there are no other dings, dents, or marks on the body, so I may just invest in a set of brand new bumpers for it. Most people would not even notice the small amount of rust on them, but she loves the truck, takes good care of it and is careful where she parks, so I may just go ahead and replace them. I am kind of anal about it......

Let us know what you find out on this truck. It can take a while to find, but nice ones are out there. thumbsup.png

Since I would have to travel to give it a good look, I think I'm going to pass on Pennsylvania for now. I found a few others that I'm checking out though. I just wish the supply was better around here. On the other hand, I'm itching for a short getaway, so going to get another burb to replace the stolen one is part of the fun.

Understand. If I were closer to Southern PA, (it's over 3 hours from me) I'd offer to take a look at it for you, and send you pictures. thumbsup.png

Maybe there is someone else here on the forum that's in that particular area that would be willing to check it out for you? Or, could you ask the dealer to put it on a lift and take pictures of the underside? That might help you make the decision to travel or not.....

Yeah...they already sold this particular truck, but I"ll keep my eye out. I am betting the lower mileage ones would have the least salt-rot issues due to the probability of not being driven in the salt if the mileage is less...but then again, they could be subject to more of the humidity-related rust.

I have my eye on a couple more in the western half of the country... I found an 06 that looks absolutely pristine rust-wise in Montana, although it's approaching 160k and needs the mud washed off. I'm not too afraid of mileage as long as things have been maintained.

I am waiting for undercarriage pics of an 05/144k in southern Utah now...

I found a 102k mile beauty in Oklahoma last week, but when I had a buddy drive me up to look at it (6hr) while it was well represented as far as the body and frame goes (no rust, clean, well taken care of), I was told it had no mechanical issues and the oil had been changed every 3k. When I got there, there was no oil pressure and the lifters were about to come out of the valve cover. Might be an easy fix, but being 6 hours out from home with no trailer, no telling how long it had been ran like that, and making it the 6hr trip back home would have been questionable. If it didn't already need a top end rebuild, it would have needed one when I got home. Grrrr.... But at least we had some good brew at the "Dead Armadillo" Brewery in downtown Tulsa.

Anywhoo...
