Hey fellow forumites - I know a few of you have or have had Corvettes. There is a possibility that I may have an opportunity to pick up one for a good price. I know the owner too, and he is more anal than me about maintenance! thumbsup.png

My brother is thinking about upgrading from his '03 50th Anniversary model to a new one, but might wait another year. He's interested in the rumblings about the '19 mid-engine Corvette, but he may decide not to wait and go for the 2018 model. Don't know yet.

He asked me if I'd be interested in buying his. It's a beauty! He has about 40k on it now, with a few upgrades. When new, he ordered many parts and had them delivered here to my house, where we took a week-end to play and install them. We took off the stock wheels, tires, rotors, calipers, exhaust, air intake, and replaced them with some high-end parts. I remember the wheels looking like jewelry, very shiny and almost $5k for the wheels and tires! We installed a Corsa exhaust and X-pipe. Special two-piece 'Stop Force' rotors and new calipers too. A few other things too, but outside of the rims, all appear stock. He has all of the OEM parts, new, in his basement. He recently (in April) had all fluids flushed and changed, new tires, and the traction control computer serviced/replaced (very expensive!). I am 100% confidant that there is nothing known needed to be done on this car. He keeps it in absolutely mint condition, as he does all his vehicles.

Some questions I have -
How difficult is it to transfer a car from Canada back to the US?
Are all Corvettes EPA certified, even if sold new in Canada?
Would there be an import tax? I know I'd pay sales tax, but don't know if I'd pay to import it back to the USA.
Anything else I should be aware of????

What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance..... Gary.

Sounds like there are gonna be some extra taxes for bringing it across the border. I don't believe that Canada emissions requirements are gonna be more or less stringent. That you'll probably have to check to see what RPO codes are on the vehicle. If it has the 50 state emission RPO code, you should be good to go.

Why don't you just register it at your brothers house using your name, and not worry about it? Is that an option? If he charges you a dollar - being family, there might not be much in the way of taxes either.

Regarding the car itself, I have a 2000 M6 Convertible, and I like it alot. I've put a lot of work/mods into it, and every time I get the itch to move up a generation or two, I just can't get myself to pull the trigger.

I Had one friend that imported a car from Canada to the states. The issue he had were tire pressure sensors. He did not have them in Canada. But there required in the states for that year car. It was a real pain, he finally got some “officially” installed.

Good luck!!

Thanks for that info. We're all good there, as this car already has them. It also has the EPA sticker for US emissions, but I've read that I'll need a letter from Chevy to prove it. Maybe my local Chevy dealer can help with contact info at Chevy for that part.

Our local DMV was closed yesterday, so either today or tomorrow I'll get down there and see if they have any specific items the need to be addressed to make the transfer easy and smooth.

My brother just ordered his new 2019 Z06, or as they say in Canada.... Zed06! biggrin2.gif His '03 Anniversary Edition is put away for the winter now, but I'll be picking that up in the late spring.

2019 Corvette Early Production Announced

2019 CORVETTE EARLY PRODUCTION ANNOUNCED

October 12, 2017

Well, that was quick! Rumors have been confirmed that production of the 2018 Corvette will cease early for the model year. The last date to order a 2018 Corvette is November 16, and the last week of production for the 2018 model year is the week of January 22. The 2019 model year will begin rolling off the line the week of January 29, 2018. Orders for the model start November 30. (whew we need a calendar for all those dates!)
Right now, planned volume for the 2018 Corvette is just shy of 9,700 units, making it one of the shortest model years.
No major changes are coming for 2019 as models, colors and options from 2018 will carry over (sans the Carbon 65 Edition). Less than 100 65th Anniversary Carbon Editions are remaining of the 650 cap for 2018. A new order guide for 2019 will be released on November 20.
Sebring Orange (G26) can now be ordered, and a small ramp up of the new hue begins the week of December 11 (in the new paint shop, we might add).
But what about the new paint shop? Production at Bowling Green Assembly starts back up November 6, and at that time the ‘basics’ (Black, Arctic White, Torch Red, Corvette Racing Yellow) will begin rolling through the state-of-the-art paint shop. Tintcoats will follow the basics at a later date (Admiral Blue, Blade Silver, Cyber Matrix Gray, Long Beach Red, Sebring Orange and Watkins Glen Gray.
As for the quality of the new paint – we’re told customers will not be disappointed. Some even tout the quality to be better than the crème de la crème Cadillac paint.
And as for a “C8” mid-engine Corvette, no official word has been received announcing the highly anticipated model. But it has been photographed quite a bit lately. Perhaps it’s GM’s way of teasing us just a little bit!
Next year’s Michelin NCM Bash will certainly be colorful when GM takes the stage to present on 2018 and 2019… and we know you’ll want to be there to ask questions and be in the know.

Corvette Dates Cheat Sheet
October 27 – 2018 Corvette unallocated sold orders cut off
November 6 – GM Plant Re-Starts 2018 Production in the new Paint Shop
November 16 – Final date to order a 2018 Corvette
November 20 – 2019 Corvette Order Guide Released
November 30 – 2019 Corvette Orders Picked-Up
December 11 – Sebring Orange Corvettes begin
January 22 (week of) – 2018 Corvette Production Ends
January 29 – 2019 Corvette Production Starts

Sweet! Good luck and hope the DMV gods are with you.

I had heard they released the schedule for the 2018/2019’s. At least they are building 2018–they could have done like they did in 1983. Right now, I’m a bit on the fence about the 2019.

With as many issues as we have had with the Tahoe, I‘m in a wait and see mode. Certainly won’t get a first production model. If people didn’t care about the fixed headlights, they really are gonna hate mid engine.

I had actually seriously considered getting a Challenger Hellcat, but was turned off by how crappily built some of those are. I have even considered the new SS. It has some challenges to it—and looks a bit like a rental car. There are not many newer vehicles on my short list anymore—especially after spending a little time behind the wheel of the ones that do make my short list.

My brother feels the same way about the first production year of the mid-engine, even with all of the advances in engineering and test mules. As for the ZR-1, he considered it, but hates the "racer-boy" looks of the wing.

Thanks Beth Anne - Really looking forward to getting this car in the spring. My brother is also very anxious to get he new one, but may have to wait until mid-summer for that to arrive. I'e already got a boatload of the OEM parts in my garage, the ones my brother and I took off the car when he upgraded the wheels/tires, exhaust, air intake, spare roof and holder, spare emblems, spare floor mats, etc, and about 100 pounds of documentation, receipts, books and magazines for the 50th Anniversary model. My brother is even more anal than I am on documentation! biggrin2.gif
